Ranks, Leveling, and Missions
The system for making your character more powerful is going to be radically
different than most games. The conventional "Level" will
not exist. Experience is spent on skills, and nothing else. The
main way of becoming more powerful, is to do mission to increase
rank
(similar to 'Quests' in other games). The amount of mission points
changes what
rank your character is. Some of the ranks have already been decided
on:
1. Civilian: This is the rank your character starts at. At the beginning
of the game, you choose a civilian specialty that will effect your
character for the rest of the game. Some specialties are: Security
Guard (higher fighting skills), Janitor (poisonous environments have
less of an effect on you), and Pilot (all piloting/driving related
skills increase at a faster rate). There will be many more, but the
game is only about a week old.
First Quest: Pass a test to show that you know the basic commands (there
will be help files availible). The purpose of this quest is to limit
the amount of people asking "How do I walk?".
2. Trainee: At this point you have not joined a faction. The only bonus
over the previous rank is your ability to leave the main complex and
explore the neutral area.
Second Quest: Join a Rule. This is one of the major choices in the game.
You must visit each of the 4 (more will be added later) Rules, and
join one. There will be extensive documentation on the advantages and
disadvantages to each Rule. Some can be found in the Rules Section.
3. Recruit: Now the fun stuff starts. You gain access to the headquarters
of the Rule you joined, and recieve all of the Rule's bonuses. Your
skills are also increased (depending on which Rule you join) and can
begin hiring NPCs.
At this point the missions branch out and each quest begins being worth
mission points instead of just immediate advancement. There will be
many missions to choose from, including Bounty Hunting, Find [object]
Missions, and quests specific to each Rule. Harder missions are worth
more
Each rank after this will make NPCs cheaper and easier to find. They
will also make skills cheaper, increase some skills (health, ect.),
and give you the ability to branch out into different kinds of characters
(sniper, pilot, grenade trooper, spy, ect.) that will give you bonuses
in their respective skills.

Non-Player Characters
We plan to make this game's characters very different from most online
games. Instead of having one character that is uber-powerful, you will
control as many people as you can afford. At the beginning, you will
have one uber-character (what's the point of a game where you're not
super-powerful?). As you progress in the game, you will be able to
buy bodyguards and rent-a-soldiers, recruit people who support your
ideas, and team up with other players to create huge armies.
There will be limits, of course. Some areas will only allow a set amount
of people to be with you (other Rules won't let you bring your army
into their headquarters), but there will also be some areas with very
large limits, including an area with no limit on how many people you
can bring with you (We will go more into detail with this area later).
As the game progresses, your characters will all become more powerful,
but the usual rules for video games will come into play: The more people
you have, the slower they become more powerful.
There are some rules about these hired characters:
1. If someone you've hired dies while working for you, you must pay their
medical bills.
2. People you hire will run away if their health gets too low. This amount
can be changed by the amount of money you pay them.
3. You can only team up with members of your Rule (NPC's can only be
hired from your Rule).
4. You cannot hire an NPC who's rank is higher than yours.
Note: NPC stands for Non-Player Character (a person in a game who is
not controlled by a real person).
